Confidence rating:

The majority of Bailleres's fortune is controlled through Grupo Bal, a closely held investment company based in Mexico City. His most valuable asset is a 69 percent stake in Industrias Penoles, the world's largest producer of refined silver according to the Silver Institute's 2019 survey. His stake is held directly and through Albacor, SA de CV, according to the company's 2018 report. Penoles, in turn, controls a 75 percent stake in Fresnillo, a Mexican gold producer.

His other publicly traded investments include a 98 percent stake in Grupo Palacio de Hierro, the upscale department store operator, and majority stakes in two insurance companies, Grupo Profuturo and Grupo Nacional Provincial. These companies are all recorded in the net worth analysis as private companies due to low-volumes of trading.

The value of cash investments is based on an analysis of dividends, insider transactions, taxes and market performance, and includes smaller closely held assets, such as his bull- and horse-raising businesses. Other assets include stakes in asset management company Valmex and Coca-Cola bottler FEMSA. The valuation was updated Sept. 9, 2019 to account for a re-calculation of Bailleres's shareholding in FEMSA and this led to a $1.4 billion fall in his net worth.

A spokesperson for Bailleres declined to comment on his net worth.
