Born on June 15, 1974, Chestnut grew up in Georgia, U.S. and spent time during his childhood helping his mother around her hair salon that she ran from their family kitchen.

He studied physics at University of Georgia and later learned web design at the Georgia Institute of Technology, according to his LinkedIn profile as of Sept. 15, 2021.

He started an Atlanta-based web design agency in 2001 called the Rocket Science Group with Dan Kurzius and they set up Mailchimp during the same year as a side-project. Six years later, the pair closed their web design agency to focus on Mailchimp, which they funded themselves.

Chestnut and Kurzius agreed in September 2021 to sell Mailchimp for $12 billion in cash and stock.

He lives in Atlanta, Georgia, with his wife. They have two sons.
