The majority of Coleman's fortune is derived from Tiger Global Management, an investment firm with about $63 billion in assets under management as of October 2022, according to a report.
Coleman is credited with 62.5% of insider assets as the firm, or about $5.2 billion, based on a March 2022 form ADV filing and the firm's returns through the end of September 2022.
The business is valued against the price-to-assets under management of four publicly traded asset managers: Sculptor Capital Management, Man Group, Janus Henderson Group and Apollo Global Management. Coleman's assets are deducted from Tiger Global's assets under management for valuation purposes and a 25% key-man risk is applied.
Coleman declined to comment on his net worth.
Coleman grew up in Glen Head, Long Island. His father was a lawyer and his mother owned an interior design firm. His grandmother, Louise Stuyvesant Wainwright was a descendant of Peter Stuyvesant, the last Dutch Governor of New York. Coleman grew up with the son of hedge fund manager Julian Robertson, Spencer. Coleman started his career with Robertson at his hedge fund, Tiger Management, in 1997 after graduating from Deerfield Academy and then Williams College, where he played lacrosse.
When Robertson closed his fund in 2000, he gave Coleman more than $25 million to manage. Coleman and the other fund managers who started their careers with Tiger Management are called "Tiger Cubs." Coleman is one of about 30 Tiger Cubs.
The following year, Coleman founded Tiger Global Management. The asset manager was an early investor in both Facebook and LinkedIn.
