The majority of Coleman's fortune is derived from Tiger Global Management, an investment firm with about $36 billion in assets under management, according to a Bloomberg News report.

Coleman is credited with 75% of insider assets, based on a March 2019 form ADV filing. Tiger's flagship hedge fund returned about 33% through 2019, according to the company.

The business is valued against the price-to-assets under management of three publicly traded hedge funds: Oaktree Capital Group, Janus Henderson Group and Man Group. Coleman's assets are deducted from Tiger Global's assets under management for valuation purposes and a 25% key-man risk is applied.

Coleman grew up in Glen Head, Long Island. His father was a lawyer and his mother owned an interior design firm. His grandmother, Louise Stuyvesant Wainwright was a descendant of Peter Stuyvesant, the last Dutch Governor of New York. Coleman grew up with the son of hedge fund manager Julian Robertson, Spencer. Coleman started his career with Robertson at his hedge fund, Tiger Management, in 1997 after graduating from Deerfield Academy and then Williams College, where he played lacrosse.

When Robertson closed his fund in 2000, he gave Coleman more than $25 million to manage. Coleman and the other fund managers who started their careers with Tiger Management are called "Tiger Cubs." Coleman is one of 30 Tiger Cubs.

The following year, Coleman founded Tiger Global Management. The hedge fund was an earlier investor in both Facebook and LinkedIn.
