The majority of Li's fortune is derived from WuXi AppTec, a pharmaceutical outsourcing provider and manufacturer of medical products. The Shanghai-based company has more than 45,000 employees globally, according to its website.
He owns a 11% stake in WuXi AppTec through two holding companies G&C VI and G&C V, according to the company's 2022 third-quarter report.
He also holds a 3% stake in WuXi Biologics through British Virgin Islands and Cayman Islands based holding companies, according to a June 2022 Hong Kong stock exchange filing.
Yao Chi, a spokesperson for the company, declined to comment on the net worth calculation.
Li was born in January 1967. He graduated from Peking University with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry in July 1989. Li obtained a Ph.D. degree in organic chemistry from Columbia University in the U.S. in February 1994, according to WuXi AppTec's 2018 prospectus.
In May 1993, Li was a founding scientist at U.S. biotechnology company Pharmacopeia Inc. Li left the company in 2000 and started WuXi PharmaTech in the same year.
His company began trading publicly in New York in 2008 before removing itself from the NYSE seven years later. It was listed in Shanghai and Hong Kong in 2018 under the new name WuXi AppTec.
