Leong was born into a wealthy army family in Guangzhou in 1961. Her privileged lifestyle ended when her father died in 1974, and her family had to move out of government housing. She joined a dance school partly for the free room and board.
She moved to Macau in 1982 and changed her name to Leong On Kei. She became Stanley Ho's fourth wife after meeting the billionaire in 1986 through a brother of his who had been attending her dance class. Backed by Ho, she built a sprawling property business in Hong Kong, Macau and China.
She's also a director of Sociedade de Turismo e Diversoes de Macau (STDM), a managing director of SJM Holdings and a member of the Legislative Council of Macau.
