Confidence rating:

The majority of Bancel's fortune is derived from his stake in Moderna, a biotechnology company developing products and treatments using messenger RNA. The firm was one of the first to develop a vaccine targeting Covid-19.

Bancel owns more than 5% of Moderna, according to a November 2022 regulatory filing. He also owns 8.4 million exercisable options in the company, filings show. In May 2022 he announced that he was exercising and selling a tranche of those options over the course of a year and donating the after-tax proceeds -- about $355 million -- to charity. The proceeds from those sales will be deducted from his cash when the charitable donations become public.

The value of his personal investments is based on an analysis of share sales, purchases, market performance and taxes.
