Wolfgang Marguerre was born in January 1941 in Heidelberg, Germany. He was raised in Heidelberg and later studied at the INSEAD business school in Paris, where he graduated with an MBA in 1972.

Octapharma was founded by Marguerre and Robert Taub in 1983. The company sought to create a safe blood plasma product to help reduce the amount of patients contracting the HIV virus through blood transfusions, according to Marguerre in a 2012 video interview with INSEAD business school. Octapharma obtained a license for its first product in 1985.

Marguerre has six manufacturing facilities and more than 7,600 employees, according to its 2017 annual report. Two of his children -- Frederic and Tobias -- serve on Octapharma's board. His daughter, Christina, worked as a product manager in Octapharma's haemophilia department, according to a 2008 article published by the Plasma Protein Therapeutics Association.
