The state now automatically registers eligible voters when they apply for a driver’s license or state ID at the Department of Motor Vehicles.

Under a 2021 law, DMV customers are required to fill out a voter registration application or else decline to register.

As of January of 2022, 22 states and Washington, D.C. have some form of automatic voter registration, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.

According to statistics from University of Florida political science professor Michael McDonald, Hawaii’s turnout rate among all people eligible to vote was the third lowest in the US in 2020.
