ECB Negative Rates May Remain for Some Time, BIS’s Coeure Says

There is a chance the euro area may not see see positive interest rates for at least another five years, former European Central Bank Executive Board member Benoit Coeure said.

Markets are indicating that the ECB’s balance sheet won’t decrease and negative rates will remain in place, said Coeure, who now heads the innovation hub at the Bank for International Settlements. To get back to normality sooner, governments in Europe may have to find new ways to boost growth.
