It’s the new favorite whiskey of hedge fund titans Izzy Englander and Steve Cohen. They like the liquid, a single malt distilled in Oregon, aged in Kentucky, and priced at $1,500 a bottle. And they like the maker, who worked for both of them as a portfolio manager before becoming a spirits entrepreneur.
It’s called the Macklowe, after Julie Macklowe, and since its first release in December from one cask producing just 237 bottles, a coterie of finance and social types have warmed to it. So have sippers at some of New York’s most chic restaurants and clubs: Casa Cipriani, Casa Lever, Lola Taverna, Bemelmans at the Carlyle, the Grill, and the Lobster Club have all emptied the hand-stenciled, hand-painted glass bottles.
