Kenyan Cider Startup Seeks More Funding as Growth Outpaces Beer

African Originals, a Kenyan cider maker, is seeking to raise funds again as demand for the drink grows among younger consumers in the East African nation.

The six-year-old company has conducted eight fundraising rounds from investors including Port Louis-based Phoenix Beverages Ltd., a unit of Mauritian investment group, IBL Ltd., which also has a stake in Kenya’s largest supermarket chain, Naivas Ltd. Other investors include Perivoli, Amaya Capital Ltd., Chandaria Capital and Federico Pirzio-Biroli, founding partner of Playfair Capital.
