Somalia’s semi-autonomous region of Somaliland suspended its participation in Turkey-backed talks aimed at reconciling differences between their governments, a setback to efforts to stabilize the volatile region.
The region proclaimed its independence from Somalia in 1991, but has yet to be recognised by any other country as a separate nation, though its leaders have expressed optimism that the Trump administration will support its quest for sovereignty. Somalia regards the region as part of its territory, and Turkey has been trying for more than a decade to mediate a resolution to the dispute.
