Finance ministers across East Africa have boosted health spending after US President Donald Trump abruptly ended billions of dollars of aid to the continent earlier this year, sending a wake-up call for countries to be more self-reliant.

Tens of thousands of health-care workers have already lost their jobs across the continent, while many of the 17 million Africans infected with HIV — two-thirds of the global total — can’t access life-saving medication.
