Colorado has begun formally reviewing ibogaine, in what could become the first step toward making the hallucinogen legally available for people seeking treatment for substance use disorders and mental health conditions.

Ibogaine, derived from the root of the iboga shrub native to Central Africa, has been shown in small studies to reduce opioid withdrawal symptoms and help treat traumatic brain injuries, though clinical evidence is still limited.
