How to Make Money and Save the Planet (Podcast)

Climate change is arguably the biggest problem facing mankind in the 21st century, and any serious effort to slow it will require further massive investments in clean energy. At investment firm GMO, portfolio manager Lucas White leads a strategy that invests in companies which stand to benefit from the transition to green energy.

It not only makes sound environmental sense, White says, but it also makes economic sense. White joins the latest episode of the "What Goes Up" podcast to discuss the thinking and motivations behind the firm’s climate-change strategy and mutual fund.

"What happened is the costs for all these clean-energy technologies dropped in a way that really nobody could’ve foreseen in a very short period of time," White said. "It was really about approaching these inflection points—where at some point in the not-so-distant future, wind, solar, electric vehicles, other clean energy solutions are going to be cheaper than their fossil-fuel-based, more traditional, forms."
